What is Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting fertility. The surgeon makes 3–5 small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope—a thin tube with a video camera—to visualize the reproductive organs. Through the other incisions, small surgical instruments can be used to treat issues such as cysts, scar tissue, or endometriosis.

What to Expect After Laparoscopy

Risks & Complications
Laparoscopy is generally safe, with a low risk of complications (1–2%). Potential risks include:
Minor risks: Infection, skin irritation, or issues related to anesthesia
Rare complications: Adhesions, hematomas, allergic reactions, nerve damage, blood clots
Very rare complications: Injury to abdominal or pelvic organs (e.g., bowel or bladder), which may require a larger incision or hospitalization
Women with previous abdominal surgery, pelvic adhesions, or higher BMI may have slightly higher risks. Discuss all potential risks and benefits with your doctor before the procedure.
